Workshops Series available in Scarborough and Bridlington (see workshops page to the right)

In 2010 I will be made Vice Principal (North East) of a contemporary vocal academy (Vocalist International Distance Learning Academy) and the year is due to herald some very exciting projects working with every age and experience of performer.

When you sign up for a Vocalist International course, you will automatically be assigned a Personal Tutor.

A Personal Tutor is a member of staff who is there to guide you through your course, to be on hand (via email) to answer your questions as you go along, listen to your audio recordings, watch your video submissions, and give you feedback as you complete each module. Your Personal Tutor is responsible for assessing your work, giving you feedback, and recommending grades.

All of our Personal Tutors are fully qualified to undertake that role, and additionally they are all very experienced performers of impeccable, often international, pedigree. In other words, whoever your Personal Tutor is, you can be sure that you are in safe hands.

The main role of a Personal Tutor is to guide you through the academic side of your studies, and to advise on practical course-related matters where necessary. Whilst they are all friendly, approachable people, they  are not there for pastoral support, so please don’t expect them to be able to advise on paying household bills, dealing with noisy neighbours or managing your stress levels!

Once you have signed up for your course and paid your fees, the majority of your dealings with VIDLA will normally go through your Personal Tutor until the course is completed. On completion of your work, your Personal Tutor will send a breakdown of module grades, plus recommendations for a final grade, to the Academy.

Dena Murray - www.denamurray.com

A graduate of Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY, with a Bachelor of Science in Speech and resident in Los Angeles, Dena is a twice published author on contemporary vocals. She has worked extensively in the industry as a performer and a teacher.  At the Musicians Institute in Hollywood she co-ordinated and implemented the technique taught by all instructors and wrote the curriculum for the vocal department.

In her private practice her students include: Holly Valentine (Hyper Crush), Sarah Hudson (Ultraviolet Sound) Christina & Michael Salerno (Within The Eddy), Lauren Adams, Jon Hensley (As The World Turns, soap star and drama), demo-and-session artists, talent from CBS, NBC, HBO, motion picture films, and television.

Hatton School of Performing Arts

www.hattonschoolofperformingarts.co.uk

Concentrating on encouraging talented youth, this dynamic performing school offers lessons across the board. Solo singing lessons are available and the school hosts group sessions in both musical theatre and contemporary (pop, jazz, country, blues, gospel etc) styles. The group sessions are themed on a ‘term’ basis and include trips to concerts, intensive harmony learning and culminate in performances for the public.

Scarborough Youth Theatre

Available in 2010, this will be a fun group dedicated to Musical Theatre. There will be shows, concerts and educational targets. Further details to follow.

Dance Expression

Based in Malton, this school is run by a Laine’s trained teacher and her ballet trained sister. From February 2010  I will be providing private singing lessons on a Friday evening and jointly leading the Saturday Musical Theatre School.

As someone passionate about singing and the voice in general it is no surprise that I have also spent some considerable time teaching diverse places including theatre schools and of course through my private practise.  I have a sound foundation in vocal techniques and through my own broad range of work have a wide spectrum of experience upon which to draw.  I mainly concentrate on contemporary vocals (Pop, Musical Theatre, Rock and Jazz), but have sung classical, baroque and 20th century music and will always assist the learner in whatever styles they wish. Technique is not exclusive to style or music choice so long as one understands the mechanisms and how to achieve the required results.

I currently teach from my home (Staxton, just outside Scarborough) and from two of the region’s top performing/dance schools.

Previous teaching credits include: Worcester Sixth Form College, Bull Frog Productions, Stagecoach, We Will Rock You/Joseph Summer School, Live Nation Stage Experience (Oliver! In Birmingham) as well as workshops with amateur and professional groups, Birmingham Theatre School and Worcester College of Technology. His private clients have ranged from beginners to top industry principals, celebrities and many first time, nervous singers.

Having relocated to Yorkshire fairly recently (December) there are a number of things to look forward to in the New Year which will involve music and singing. There will be community productions, concerts, groups and many other exciting things.
